Trick-or-Treat 2026
Zupe's Halloween costume - much
like the last few years - went through SEVERAL iterations. No one will be
surprised that his original idea was to be Thor. He needed a new - and
not Ann-made- Mjolnir. So, we went to the Spirit Halloween store early in
October to find they didn't have that particular hammer. (*Please note:
he wanted a hammer that, if thrown, would wing its way back into his
hand. Readers may be surprised that we found none like that.) At
Spirit Halloween, however, he found a very cool trident and so the costume hero
changed from Thor to Poseidon. I bought green sweat pants. He had a
Poseidon t-shirt and a gold crown. We were set. He wore that to school
for their party - sans the trident - which was deemed a
"weapon". (I considered making an 8-inch cardboard trident, but
decided not to push the weapon issue and instead made him a fish
bracelet.) As the BIG DAY approached, Poseidon was dropped in favor of
being Dr. Doom. There ARE Dr. Doom costumes for both children and adults
at Spirit Halloween - but there was also a very, very cool scythe with a skull
on the top* and - then and there- the quest became to find a Hades
costume. You might be surprised that people look at you funny when you
ask where you might find Hades Helm of Darkness. The best the poor young
man could do for us was demon masks.
Me. I am not a
demon. Or a superhero. Or a god. Just a nameless, voiceless
villager - who can probably be found wandering through Hades' Fields of
Asphodel...
*Said scythe did not make the
photo. It is in his hand but Zupe was impatient in the picture
taking. He was impatient in the scything, too, and it began much before
trick-or-treat with the exuberant soul reaping resulting in the blade and skull
being sheared off the staff. Not having any superglue, the scythe was
repaired with masking tape. It was quite a sight....and did not survive
the day. We returned home after t-o-t with the top of the scythe and the
rubber mask in the treat bag and my too-warm robe thrown over my arm.
And, no potatoes. See Halloween 2025.
